Remember, the Energy Star label is made up of multiple criteria. U-value (the ability to insulate and prevent heat loss through radiation), VT (visual light transmittance, natural light and visibility) and SHGC (solar heat gain)
Engineering the perfect thermal unit requires a balancing act. Too high of a u-value equals lower visual light and solar heat gain. Too much visual light and solar heat gain equals lower u-value.
Glass - there is a great deal of traffic passing in both directions, the objective is to take advantage of the positive gains (VT and SHGC) and minimize the negative losses (i.e. heat loss through poor u-value)
The truth about triple glazed units
A standard energy star rated double glazed unit already has a 46% loss of natural light (due to low-E coatings) triple has 30-35% less natural light than double. Add the insect screen which is 50% natural light loss overall, youʼre left with a window with 15% natural light on average.
Ask yourself, what is the purpose of having a window? Natural Light and Ventilation.
Some negatives about triple glazed windows
- Youʼre doubling your chance of seal failure
- Youʼre adding 40% more weight to the sash which will certainly lead to operational problems
- 30-35% less natural light than double glazed units
- 30-35% less solar gain (very important during winter months)
- Your home will be dark and depressing
We do offer the option of triple but do not recommend it under normal non-extreme weather conditions
